November Instagrams, and a few door photos, and Advent

While in Aix at the beginning of the month, I took a few door photos.  Aix is a great city for doors!

I intended to Instagram the door photos that day, but ended up posting this one instead:

Back before winter arrived, I posted that this right here was the reason I moved from Paris to Marseille all those years ago.  Cloudy versus Sunny.  50's versus 70's.

The new view from my window.  Do I like the Ferris Wheel?  Looking at it?  Yes.  Riding it?  Never. I do love my new view.

Especially at night when it's all lit up.  So pretty!

I posted this in joy after Auburn beat Georgia two weeks ago.  I post it in nervous anticipation for tonight's Iron Bowl.  War Eagle!

Midwives were on strike one afternoon, sitting in an intersection and thus blocking traffic, buses and the tram.

A little photo I took for Thanksgiving before I put the harvest decorations away and put up the Christmas ones.  Yay!

Last week, I baked around 100 cookies for an event the Center was participating in.  This week I made 7 pies.  Seven.  Good thing I've joined a gym, huh?

These are just a few shots of the Christmas decorations I've got put up.  In the middle row, on the right, is my Advent Wreath.  You can see the small wooden Mary on a donkey to the left of the forest of candles wreath, and starting on December 1st, she'll work her way around the wreath as I do my advent devotionals each evening.
This year, I'm using two different devotionals for Advent.  In the mornings, I'll be reading from Meditations from Advent: As Imagined Through the Eyes of Mary, by my friend, Debby Fahim.  You can purchase it by clicking HERE.  In the evenings, I'll be reading The Greatest Gift, by Ann Voskamp.  (Would you consider clicking THIS FIRST before making any Amazon purchases this shopping season?  Thanks!)  Like every year, I'm looking forward to the season of slowing down and reflecting on Immanuel, God with us.

Also, for Advent this year, I'm going to (try to) post a December Daily post that gives a glimpse into my life here in France.  I'll be sending out a newsletter via email to explain a bit more.  Hope you enjoy Advent this year!  Let me know what ways you celebrate...I love hearing from you!

Thanksgiving Top 10 List 2013 edition

Back in 2005, as I was preparing to leave the UAE, I was trying to mentally gather all the good things about that place, and so I began making top ten lists.  The day Thanksgiving approached, and it just made sense to make a list for that.  A tradition was born, and I've done it ever year since...except for last year.  Oops.  Here are my thanksgiving lists from years past:
2005
2006
2007
2008
2009
2010
2011
2012: While I fully intended to write a Thanksgiving post, it just never happened.  What with having been on a Big White Boat for two weeks, and then having just arrived in America days before Thanksgiving, and being reunited with my family... there was just other stuff going on.  Not to say I wasn't thankful last year, I certainly was!  I just didn't blog about it.  Oops.  Funny to miss a blogging tradition I'd done for seven straight years.

And thus, here's my Thanksgiving top 10 list for 2013.  (As always, I am always thankful for the biggest and deepest blessings in my life: salvation, family, friends, health, home, job.  My list consists of looking back at the year and being thankful for the top 10 things on top of the normal things.)  In no particular order:

10.  Marseille 2013: Where Weird is the New Black.  I've always thought Marseille was quirky.  This year, however, with it being the Cultural Capital of Europe for 2013, Marseille grew weirder by the minute.  Someone on that Cultural Capital Committee seemed to think that culture = weird.
          a.  Bunny Invasion : That time when I was walking down the main street of Marseille and saw hundreds upon hundreds of bunny...stickers... Why?  Nobody knows.
          b.  Floats and Flames : That time when they decided it would be a good idea to put open flames all over the Vieux Port and then invite the whole city to come.  Thousands of people + lots of alcohol + fires with no barriers + small space = bad idea culture.
          c.  Sheep on the Vieux Port : That time when thousands of sheep, horses, and a pair of zebroids were paraded through the streets of Marseille.  Okay, I'll go with the Committee on this one, it was pretty cool.
          d.  Randomness all year long: The plastic painted animals all over town.  (Which, by the way, the Marseillais must not love the statues, because they keep getting pranked.  Someone cut the antlers off of this one.  The camel that was wearing swim trunks and sunglasses somehow got um, stripped, so they ended up painting the poor naked thing blue all over.)  Or how bout the time that they pretended to paint the white church (in the background of the picture with the deer below) a whole mess of pastels?

9.  Lent: Lent was special this year.  I decorated for it, fasted from meat during it, (also quit Facebook right before and haven't returned), and just all around enjoyed that time with the Lord.  Definitely one of the most special things about 2013 for me.

8.  The summer interns: This year was our first time to host a group of interns from a particular university.  I enjoyed all the planning for them, but even more, every single minute that they were here with us.  I can't wait to do it all over again this next year!

7.  Finishing my kitchen: I'm not gonna lie, the actual process of finishing the kitchen brought many tears, and I don't think I'd want to do it again.  But I was so glad when it was done, and I'm so happy to have it a real kitchen now.  How I functioned for 16 months without an oven, countertops, or storage space for food is beyond me.
          a.  Parts 1-3
          b.  Part 4
          c.  Part 5
          d.  Part 6

6.  Greece: I honestly never expected to enjoy Greece as much as I did.  It was just such a wonderful time!  Even now, whenever I think back to it, or talk about it, a giddy happy smile breaks out on my face.  So ever thankful for the gift of that time!

5.  My new quilting class: Even just last night, I was sitting at the sewing machine, working on a new technique that I've learned in my class, and was amazed.  What I couldn't do three months ago, and what even seemed so hard last week to do (I had to redo the same line of sewing three times before I got it barely right!), I can now do spot-on perfect every time.  I'm thankful for all I'm learned, the improvement in my French comprehension, and the fun I have in the class with the French ladies as well.  It's such a great creative outlet for me!

4.  iPhone: It seems so silly materialistic to say that it's one of the top ten things I'm thankful for, so materialistic, but... when I live on the other side of the world from my family and closest friends, and yet I can still text for free through iMessage, and can FaceTime call them for free, it really helps with homesickness.  Not only that, but it's helped immensely with my Bible memorization, of which I'll blog more about later.  Really...I love my phone and am thankful for it!

3.  Rereading my journals: One of the more interesting spiritual practices I did this year was to reread through all my old journals.  I'd highly recommend doing that to anyone who is a regular journaler.  (I'm not sure that's a word, but you get it, right?)  I was able to see major lessons God taught me, as well as regular, consistent weaknesses...which showed me areas I can work on to grow in my walk with the Lord.

2.  Sports: Getting caught up in the Tour de France and American College Football has been fun this year.  Shoo...I even joined a gym this year and have been enjoying that too!  Why am I thankful for all of it?  Well, I'm thankful for the gym because it's good to feel so healthy, and just to have a whole new place to go and be around people and meet new kinds of people.  And as for watching sports--I'm thankful for it because it gives me a form of entertainment to watch that is clean and fun.

1.  Fun with friends: Master Yoda recently wrote me about how it seems like every year I keep having more and more fun.  I hadn't really thought about it...I just try to take advantage of the opportunities around me and enjoy the blessings of the people in my life.  I've already recently written about the amazing friends God has given me.  And Master Yoda's right: we've had some good fun this year!  Like the time me, the Artist, and Mr. and Mrs. X went to Menton to see the citrus festival.
And the time that Whitey came back to France to see me and I laughed for five days straight.
Or the time the Soul Twin, and Eskimo, and I were reunited altogether for the first time since 1999.
Already mentioned it, but what about that time that me, the Artist, and the camelridingcowgirl hung out in Athens?
Or the time I went kayaking with Giggles, Munchkin, the Crazy Cajun, the Bodybuilder, the Artist, and the boss's wife and kids?  Or the time when some of us had a picnic on my bed because that's where the AC was and thus the only cool place in my apartment?  Or how about the almost entire month of August with the Superheroes?  Or when the Real McCoys came back to France for the gazillionth time to visit blessmyheart?  Or the fun in Barcelona?  Or the many laughs over dinner?  Or the lavender fields tradition with the X's? Or game nights?  Or movie nights? Or...

Well, needless to say, it has been a fun year with friends.  I've been homesick more than normal lately, missing the states, missing my family, missing church in English, missing fall leaves and apple cider and fried okra, missing watching football at a normal hour.  But I am still thankful, even after 11 years, to be here.

Thankful that Jesus keeps me alive, keeps me going day after day, keeps me.

Algerians Celebrating Their Win

You could call me a boring old spinster lady.

I was sitting at home, tucked under a quilt, hand stitching my latest quilt, watching Boy Meets World, when I heard an explosion outside my window.

Okay, so old and spinster?  Yes.  Boring?  No way.

I looked out my window, and saw a huge group of Algerians amassing down at the Vieux Port.  (How did I know they were Algerians?  1 out 2 of them were sporting the Algerian flag in one way or another.  As a cape.  As a dress.  As a banner.  As a tie.  As something to let cars drive through.  As a veil for cars.  As...well, you get the drift.)  I took a little Instagram video with the caption, "I suppose the Algerians won something?"

Oh my.

They won the qualifying game for the World Cup.  And my street exploded.  EXPLODED.  They stormed the Vieux Port with many flames, until the cops made them put the flames out.  More Algerians came.  The new ones that came lit new flames.  Then the riot police came and blocked them from the Vieux Port.

So they came onto my street with their flames.

In front of my building with their flames.

I'm all about celebrating a win (remember the time coughthispastweekendcough when I woke my neighbors by cheering over an Auburn touchdown?)...with happy honking for hours...and flags...and drums...and grown men dancing in the street and on top of cars...and waving flags.  I mean, I come from a town that does this to celebrate when we win a game:
(...and hopefully we will be doing plenty of that this coming Saturday night after the Iron Bowl!  War Eagle!)

But the fires?  I don't get it.  I was a bit concerned they would set my building on fire until my boss reminded me that my 150-year-old building is made of stone and thus, isn't going anywhere.

You can see the police lined up in the middle of this photo to block the crowd from coming back onto the Vieux Port.  I think, at one point, they must've made them move away from the Tunisian restaurant, because they moved from there and gathered in front of the big white church just next door.  I wasn't about to go down and join the festivities, nor ask why they're such pyromaniacs.

Mom and Dad...you may not want to watch the video.  Haha.
All in all, it was a fun night.  It was so cold I couldn't keep the window open for long periods of time to watch, and at one point, the smoke was too intense to keep watching.  But I do love happy honking and seeing the people I came here to love on dancing on top of cars.  As much as I enjoyed it, it doesn't mean I want to be here during the World Cup...

I think as long as I keep living where I do, life will never be boring.

Loving me some college football

It was at about 1:45am local time that this happened, and I woke all my neighbors with my screaming:
I can't stop watching the video and laughing out of pure joy at that catch and touchdown.  War Eagle, baby!

Cast of Characters

Someone recently asked me who all the people are on my blog, and how they got their monikers.  It wasn't the first time I'd been asked that, and I thought...maybe, after more than 9 years, I should write a post about the who's who on my blog.  I'm only going to give you the main cast, not the "also starring."  Trying to keep it simple (and even so, this is one long post!).

Just in case you didn't know... this is me.  I call myself bettercountry when on the internets.  How'd I get that name?  Well, 9 years ago, when I began blogging, way back before Facebook and Linkdin and Twitter and etc, people thought it wasn't so smart to put all your information out there for the world to see.  So I created a moniker for my blog/internet identity... and just kept it that way.  bettercountry is a shortened version of the full name of my blog, which comes from the verse Hebrews 11:16.  Voila.  That's me.  If you'd like to know more about me, read THIS.

Sue-Wee was my roommate for the two years that I lived in Paris.  She's the non-family person I lived with the longest in my life.  She was a regular on the blog throughout 2007 and 2008.  How'd she get her name?  She is an Arkansas Razorback, and whenever she'd do her cheer for her team, it sounded to me like she was saying "Sue-Wee."  This is my favorite picture of her from her time in France.

The camelridingcowgirl has been a regular on the blog since 2009, and has been my favorite travel buddy since then.  We went on the Mad Dash About Europe together (six countries in as many days), and then went on the Big White Boat together with her parents.  She actually came up with her name herself, as it's her internet name.  She's a cowgirl, the cool boot wearing kind, who moved to a desert country where there are camels.  Hence the name.  Then she moved to France, and I'm so glad she did.  Here we are rowing a boat together in Slovenia...one of my all-time favorite memories with her ever.

This is Barney (left) and Woody (right).  Barney and I were friends for a year before Woody came along.  They met during a summer in Marseille, and they now live in Marseille, yay, for almost two years now!  Barney got her name because she is my Barnabas, my "daughter of encouragement."  Not that she's my daughter, or a purple dinosaur, but that she's an encouragement to me.  It just seemed to work.  Woody has been his nickname for a long time, longer than I've know him.  If you know him, then you know where the name comes from.  They're cute, aren't they?

Princess William is probably my oldest friend.  Not that she's old...but that we've been friends the longest.  She and I met at an international training back in 1999, and then ended up going to grad school together a few years later.  Sometimes I wonder what if I'd gone to different schools than I did?  Well...I figure she and I'd still be friends because she went to Auburn (war eagle!) and even lived in Turkey the same year that I did (but not at the same time).  We've been through a lot, me and her, and I'm happy to call her one of my dearest friends.  Why is she Princess William?  Well, back in grad school, she and her roommate had the same name, and nobody at school knew anybody else's last names.  So we named one of them William and the other one Harry.  She lives in England now, so it just makes even more sense.

The Real McCoys are my African family.  When I lived in North Africa, they became my closest friends...and it just sort of stuck.  They have to leave for visa purposes every few months, and often come to visit me.  I love, love, love when they come to visit, and love being an aunt to their kiddos.  They got their name because of two things: (1) McCoy has to do with their last name--which is NOT McCoy and (2) they are legit, the real deal.

The Superheroes live in Paris.  They, like the Real McCoys, are so legit.  They're so REAL.  They do their job and they do it well.  They love Jesus and people and it shows.  They've loved me and shown me grace through some of the ugliest periods of my life, and I am a better person because of their friendship.  I truly look up to them and desire to be like them in many ways.  I have watched them grow...watched their kids grow...and well, they're one of the few constants in my life.

With my company, there is a two-year internship that's a pretty awesome deal.  It's what I did in Portugal.  And again and again until my company asked me to stop being an intern and sign on the dotted line already.  So I did.  But in all these years, I've gotten to know a lot of the interns, seeing as I was one three times.  There was Schroomie #1 and Schroomie #2 in Turkey.  Sue-Wee, and Swimmer, and about six others in Paris.  JellyBean and KO and Bell and Flower in Marseille.  Hugs in Paris.  Now BonFils here in Marseille.  Here's how he feels about it:
(Just kidding.  That's actually just how he felt after his first day of language school...and probably still feels since he's only about three weeks into it.  Bless his heart.)

CSI was one of the many two-year interns to come through France.  I met her before she flew over the big ocean, and actually flew with her across the ocean.  We went to language school together in Besançon, and shared oh-so-many laughs once we were both in Marseille.  She was a criminal science major in college, and so that's how she got her blog name.  I was so tempted to put one of the eight billion silly photos I have of her up here, but went with this one instead, cause she looks so pretty in it.  I miss her antics, I do.  And I miss beating her at backgammon, despite her magic ability to always roll double sixes, always.
Okay, I couldn't resist.  How bout the time she "borrowed" my phone and changed my wallpaper so it looked like this:

Pantene was another two-year intern (who stayed for a third year).  She got her name because she has the most beautiful hair you've ever seen, and really, Pantene should hire her as a model.  Maybe she could put this photo in her portfolio to them?

(In all fairness, that was a major Mistral day...but I get such a giddy joy from posting that photo on the internets.  It's like when parents show baby bathtub photos to dates.  Hehe...) Seriously, Pantene's been gone for a little over a year now (actually, 13 months exactly today), and I still miss her.  I'm so thankful for iMessage and FaceTime and how much that helps to stay in touch with her.  But I miss going for coffee and walking down Prado together....

This is my all-time favorite photo of the Artist, photobombing my picture of the Parthenon.  She and I met back in summer of 2008 (when we also met Barney), and have been friends since.  I've been to her ranch home in Texas, she's been to my house in Alabama.  We've shared laughs, heartaches, recipes, and so many memories.  She left two weeks ago and I keep waiting for her to come back from vacation...and then I remember that it's not a vacation she went to.  These two-year interns are killing me.  Anyway, the Artist is a professional Artist, and so um, her blog name is a no-brainer.

So...I don't have a single serious photo of the Bodybuilder.  I have ones of him sleeping, and ones of him being silly, but never just a straight smiling photo.  Ah well.  So the Bodybuilder came as one of our summer interns for a few summers in a row, and then came as a two-year intern.  Like the Artist, he and I have been friends in America as well as in France.  He actually only lives about an hour and a half from my folks in Alabama.  He reminded me so much of my brother so often, he sort of became the France brother.  (Don't worry, Master Yoda, no one will ever replace you.  Impossible, that is.)  If you've ever seen the Bodybuilder, then you'd understand where he got his name.  I love this photo of him...hehe.
...hehe...and I love this one too.  The guy in focus in this photo is the Crazy Cajun.  He is both of those adjectives: crazy and cajun.  Here's been here in France with us for almost two years, learning French.  He's supposed to leave in January and will be greatly missed by many.

Here's me and the Artist and the Bodybuilder at their going away dinner in Marseille a few weeks ago.  It's the only picture I have of the three of us together, despite the fact that we've been friends for four years now.  Crazy.

Then there are Giggles and Munchkin.  I'll let you decide which one's which.  Haha.  Just kidding.  Munchkin is the guy on the right, and Giggles is his wife.  He got his name for a game he likes to play with the same name.  She's Giggles because, well, she's so joyful she giggles a lot.  She keeps me sane.  I told her the other night that I know her husband is her better half and all, but really, I think she's my better half.  When it comes to work, it always seems like God sends her in to save my day and meet me in my weaknesses...which happen to be her strengths.  I'm so thankful for that.

Mr. and Mrs. X might just be my favorite people ever.  God brought them into my life at a time when I needed some goodpeople friends...and that's what they are: goodpeople and friends.  They live in X, and well, hence their name.  I don't know anything better for my heart in southern France than hanging out with those two.  This is this year's trip to the lavender fields:
And seriously...how awesome is this photo?!  Me, Mrs. X, and the camelridingcowgirl, and lavender (back in 2009).  That's one worth framing right there.  Where would I be without those two women in my life?  Seriously, I just don't know.

And then there was Master Yoda.  This guy.  Oh my.  Many have asked where he got his name.  He gave it to himself.  You can ask him why he chose it, because after all these years, I'm not sure that I even know myself.  I suppose he thinks himself wise.  Or green, short, and with hairy pointed ears?
He was lucky enough to marry Princess Leah.  Her name just came easy, since she was marrying Yoda.  A girl couldn't ask for a better sister-in-lawlove.

I'd put a picture of Mom and Dad, but then Mom would get right on a plane, fly over the ocean and KILL ME.  (Hmmm...maybe that's how I can get her to come back to France to visit?)

And there you have it.  The people in my life.  There are so many more: the Suits and Creedance and notpoems, and Lanola, and Whitey, and Classy Spice, and the Soul Twin and Bound and ... more.  I'm blessed.

Truly blessed.
