I took a glass and filled it to the brim, explaining that it represented God's love. I'd already told her how He IS love, it encompasses who He is. So, is it really possible for some of that water to be poured out and Him to lose part of who He is? Not at all. God being God means that He is never lacking in any of His attributes; He cannot lose any of His love.
She responded that a mother never stops loving her children, but when they are bad, she may lose some love in that moment. I agreed and explained how that was an example of human, finite love. God's love is entirely different, though, as it is infinite.
If that glass was me and my love, it could be full of love for her, my friend, at the moment. But, she does something to irritate me, and oop! I poured some of the water out and said I'd lost a little love. If she did enough to irritate me, I could pour all the water out and not love her anymore. She agreed with that.
Then, I turned the water faucet on, placed the glass under the constant flow, and said that this is how God's love is. Constantly full and overflowing. Even if it were possible for Him to lose some love for us when we are bad, because He is a fountain of overflowing love, He constantly is overflowing in love for us. That glass will never be empty. The faucet will never turn off. He will keep the glass full and overflowing and replenished.
Later, in the stillness, He spoke to my heart and whispered that I ought to remember the truths I shared with my friend earlier. The image of the overflowing fountain of love was just as much for me as it was for her. Oh, how good He is.
